1. Know Your Fabric
Check the label before anything else. Wool, cotton, fleece, and synthetic blends all have different needs.
-
Wool or alpaca: Gentle, cool-water washing and air drying.
-
Cotton: Machine washable on a mild cycle.
-
Fleece or synthetics: Cold wash to prevent pilling.
2. Wash with Care
-
Spot clean first. Treat small spills right away with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
-
Gentle detergent. Use a wool- or delicate-friendly formula.
-
Cold or lukewarm water. Hot water can shrink or distort fibers.
3. Dry the Right Way
-
Air dry flat. Lay the blanket on a clean, dry surface out of direct sunlight.
-
Avoid high heat. Tumble dryers can damage fibers; if you must use a dryer, choose low or no heat.
4. Store Properly
-
Clean before storing. Stains left behind can set or attract pests.
-
Use breathable bags. Cotton storage bags or pillowcases allow airflow and prevent musty smells.
-
Keep it dry and cool. Avoid basements or attics where humidity fluctuates.
5. Refresh Between Washes
-
Shake out the blanket outdoors to remove dust.
-
Lightly mist with a fabric refresher or steam to remove wrinkles and odors.
-
Sunlight for an hour or two (not too harsh) can naturally deodorize.
